People find strange things on a beach – level 3
11-07-2025 07:00
Janet Dingwell found what looked like a World War II landmine on a beach in Red Head, Canada. She contacted the police, who waited for a special team from Gagetown to investigate.
Janet’s suspicion came from a childhood experience. Her sister Julie recalled a time in the 1960s when they found a similar object on the same beach. As children, they rolled it home thinking it was a treasure. Their father quickly realized it was a mine and made them lie on the floor until help arrived. Jeff Allard, a technician at CFB Gagetown, says his team responds to 20–30 calls a year about unusual or dangerous items. Some are found when people clean out old houses, dig in their yards, or walk on beaches. Many of these objects are from past wars and are still dangerous. Allard’s team took Janet’s call seriously because of the area’s history. In the end, it was just an old propane tank buried in the sand with only the top showing.
Difficult words: suspicion (a feeling that something is wrong), recall (to remember), propane (a flammable gas).
