People go to see a volcano – level 2

17-07-2023 07:00

A volcano erupted last week in a valley near a mountain called Litli-Hrútur, 30 kilometers from Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. There were a lot of earthquakes before it happened.

Authorities in Iceland told tourists not to go to the volcano, because it was spitting out lava and bad gases. They said that the gases were very dangerous. Authorities closed the area so people couldn’t go near the lava.  But people are going to see the eruption even though it is prohibited.

It is not a big eruption, but it is stronger than the ones last year. An Irish guide said it is warm and nice, but the gas is too hot. People ignore the warning because seeing the eruption is very attractive for them.

Difficult words: spit out (to let something go with force from the mouth), prohibited (something what people mustn’t do), ignore (not to notice or regard something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What safety measures have been taken by local authorities to protect people from the dangerous gases emitted by the volcano?
