Protest in Sri Lanka – level 3

20-11-2018 07:00

The Sri Lankan president dissolved the country’s parliament and ousted the prime minister in favour of his preferred candidate. The president also called for fresh elections on 5th January to try and secure backing for his new PM.

Politicians and civilians gathered in Colombo, the country’s capital, last Sunday evening for a candlelit vigil to protest the president’s decision. The mayor of Colombo said that it was pretty evident that people who never come to protest decided to mark their presence simply because they feel that democracy has been taken away from their country.

Difficult words: dissolve (close, end), oust (remove from a position), fresh (new), backing (support), gather (come together in large numbers), vigil (a calm, peaceful demonstration).
