Russian jets fly over Estonia – level 2
23-09-2025 07:00
On Friday, three Russian fighter jets got into Estonian airspace without permission for 12 minutes. Estonia asked NATO for a meeting under Article 4, which a country uses when it feels its safety is in danger.
Poland also said Russian planes came close to a drilling platform in the Baltic Sea. NATO leaders will meet next week to discuss what to do.
Experts say these flights are not accidents but provocations. An expert explained that the jets flew without safety signals or contact with ground control, which made it dangerous. It seems that Russia wants to show NATO as weak and unwilling to protect smaller countries in the east.
Another expert said Russia also collects information, such as how fast NATO reacts with its fighter jets.
Difficult words: permission (saying yes to something), drilling platform (a large structure in the sea where people take out oil or gas from the ground), provocation (an action that makes someone angry), unwilling (not wanting to do something).

Why do experts believe the Russian jets’ flights were deliberate provocations rather than accidents?
