Russian jets fly over Estonia – level 3
23-09-2025 07:00
On Friday, three Russian fighter jets violated Estonian airspace for 12 minutes without permission.
Estonia immediately raised Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which allows members to request urgent talks if they feel their security is under threat. Poland also reported Russian jets near a drilling platform in the Baltic Sea.
NATO will meet next week to decide how to respond to these incidents. Experts argue these actions are more political than military. Analyst Konstantin Eggert explained that the Russian planes flew without communication or transponders, showing the incursion was deliberate. He added that Russia wants to expose NATO’s weaknesses and demonstrate that the alliance may not fully protect its eastern members, such as Estonia, Poland, or Finland.
Another analyst, Thomas Wiegold, said Russia also gathers intelligence during these operations, such as the speed of NATO’s response. While drones and new technology play a growing role, the incidents show Russia adapting quickly and testing NATO’s readiness.
Difficult words: transponder (an electronic device for sending signals), incursion (a sudden entry into a place), deliberate (planned).
