Syria one year after Assad’s end – level 3

12-12-2025 15:00

Syria marked one year after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, and many people went to Damascus to join large public events and a military parade.

Leaders spoke about unity and the hope for a new future. Many people felt joy about the end of long years of war; however, minority groups raised concerns because of the new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa’s past.

Reports from across the country showed that control remained unclear in several regions.

A visit to the ruined town of Daraa showed streets full of broken houses and people who couldn’t begin rebuilding. Many families lived without roofs, money, or basic services. Survivors told stories of loss, and some said they still waited for justice for relatives who died in killings during the war. Many people couldn’t afford food or clean water.

Aid workers explain that many hospitals closed, and mothers often couldn’t find medical help. Some families returned from abroad and hoped to rebuild their lives, but most didn’t have money. Experts say Syria needs time and money, but it will not be easy to live peacefully.

Difficult words: minority group (a small group of people in a country who are different from the larger group), survivor (a person who stays alive after danger), justice (fair treatment), aid (help).

What obstacles prevented families in Daraa from rebuilding their homes and lives after the war?
