US teenagers do not sleep enough – level 1

Many US teenagers do not get enough sleep. Doctors say that teens need 8 to 10 hours, but most do not get so much. The main reason is that many schools begin lessons too early.

When teens grow up, their body clock changes. They feel sleepy later, around 11 pm. Waking a teen up at 6 am. is like waking an adult up at 4 am. Teens are moody. Sleeping little hurts their learning, memory, and feelings. It also causes car crashes.

Experts say that schools must start later, after 8:30 am. When schools do this, students sleep more. They get better grades, and they feel happier. The community is safer because there are fewer car accidents. This is the right thing to do for all students.

Difficult words: body clock (a natural timer inside your body that tells you when you should feel sleepy and when you should feel awake), moody (when your feelings change often and quickly), memory (remembering things).
