Voting in Congo – level 3

18-01-2019 15:00

Since the Democratic Republic of the Congo became independent, it has never had a peaceful transition of power. People are afraid that there could be violence as the presidential election recently took place.

Election officials are waiting to release the results, which worries people that there has been a manipulation of the votes. However, the leader of the election commission said that the large size of the country made it impossible to release the votes on time.

People in the opposition do not believe this claim and feel that the votes will be manipulated to favour the person that the current president wants to come after him. Despite that people do know who the winner is, all three of the presidential candidates are saying that they won.

Difficult words: violence (fighting), election (electing – voting/choosing the leader), election commission (the people in charge of the elections).
