World Mosquito Day – level 2
22-08-2025 07:00
World Mosquito Day happens every year on August 20th. It is not a party but a way to remember the danger mosquitoes bring to human health.
The date remembers Sir Ronald Ross, who in 1897 discovered that mosquitoes transmit malaria. His work changed medicine. Even after more than 125 years, mosquito-borne diseases still kill many people. Dengue fever spreads the fastest and killed almost 12,000 people last year.
Professor Beth McGraw explains that mosquitoes are small but very dangerous for people everywhere. She says families can help stop them. Mosquitoes like to lay eggs in water. If people remove standing water near houses, there will be fewer mosquitoes.
More than one million people die every year from these diseases. The day reminds us to act and to protect life.
Difficult words: discover (to find new knowledge), transmit (to carry a disease), act (to do something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What method does Professor Beth McGraw recommend to reduce the number of mosquitoes around houses?
