World Mosquito Day – level 3

22-08-2025 07:00

World Mosquito Day, observed on August 20, is not a celebration but a reminder of the serious dangers that mosquitoes pose to global health.

The day marks the 1897 discovery by Sir Ronald Ross that mosquitoes transmit malaria, a breakthrough that permanently changed medical science.

Despite this milestone, mosquito-borne illnesses still cause enormous harm today, with dengue spreading faster than any other and killing nearly 12,000 people last year. Outbreaks continue into 2025, showing the urgent need for control. Globally, more than one million people die annually due to mosquito-borne diseases. World Mosquito Day urges vigilance, innovation, and united action against these deadly insects.

Beth McGraw, a biology professor, stresses that mosquitoes, though tiny, have an extraordinary impact on human health. She points out that prevention at home is critical. Because mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water, eliminating such places, like water collected under pots or around air conditioners, can help reduce their numbers.

Difficult words: breakthrough (a sudden discovery or development), dengue (a mosquito-borne disease caused by a virus and common in tropical areas), vigilance (careful watch and attention).
