World Mosquito Day – level 1

22-08-2025 07:00

World Mosquito Day is on August 20th. It is not a happy day. People use this day to think about the danger of mosquitoes. In 1897, Sir Ronald Ross finds that mosquitoes carry malaria. This is very important for doctors.

Today, mosquitoes still make many people sick. Dengue fever is a dangerous disease. It spreads very fast and kills many people every year. Mosquitoes lay eggs in water. If water stays under plants or near houses, more mosquitoes come.

Professor Beth McGraw says that people can help at home. We can take away water around our houses. This stops mosquitoes from growing. More than one million people die every year from these insects. This day asks us to stay careful and strong.

Difficult words: danger (something what is not safe), mosquito (a small animal which has six legs and drinks animal blood), malaria (a dangerous disease in tropical countries).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What method does Professor Beth McGraw recommend to reduce mosquito growth around homes?
