Australia’s social media ban starts – level 2

12-12-2025 07:00

Australia now has a rule that stops children under 16 from use of social media. Big companies must take away accounts of young users, and they must block new ones. If they don’t do it, they will get a very high fine.

The government says the rule helps because many children have cyberbullying, fear, and trouble with sleep. Doctors see more young people with strong stress, and some very young children have trouble with control of their phone use. Some experts like the rule and believe it may help. They say the companies care more about money than about the health of children. They also say the apps use tools that keep children online for long hours.
Other experts don’t like the rule. They say children can still use secret tools to get online. They want better information for children and safer settings.

Difficult words: fine (money you must pay when you break a rule), cyberbullying (when someone hurts another person online with bad words or actions), secret (not open or known to other people).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What alternative measures do critics of the rule propose to protect children using social media?
