Gaza famine – level 3
27-08-2025 07:00
The United Nations has confirmed famine in Gaza City and nearby areas, calling it a “failure of humanity.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres described it as a man-made disaster.
A UN-backed group, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), placed Gaza at Phase 5, the most severe level of hunger, where more than half a million people are facing catastrophic conditions, including starvation and death. The IPC warns that without an immediate large-scale response, famine-related deaths will rise.
Israel has strongly rejected the report, calling it an outright lie and denying the existence of famine. However, more than 100 humanitarian groups, UN bodies, and several of Israel’s allies say aid is restricted. Aid workers and witnesses on the ground describe extreme suffering, high food prices, and children dying from malnutrition.
The famine in Gaza is the first confirmed by the IPC outside Africa. The UN says it was preventable and blames systematic obstruction of aid. The crisis continues without a ceasefire.
Difficult words: starvation (suffering or death caused by lack of food), malnutrition (serious illness from not having enough healthy food), obstruction (the act of blocking or stopping something).
