The sun is very active – level 3

18-11-2025 15:00

Scientists reported spectacular aurora borealis sightings across several US states and explained how these colorful displays are connected to powerful solar storms.

These storms begin with huge eruptions of hot material and magnetic fields from the sun’s atmosphere. When they travel through space and reach Earth, they disturb our magnetic field and add large amounts of energy to it. This disturbance produces the northern and southern lights but also creates problems for modern technology.

Solar storms accelerate charged particles toward Earth’s atmosphere, leading to strong electric currents in power networks. These events can also interfere with satellites. Controllers often work through the night to keep low-orbit satellites at the correct altitude, sometimes burning extra fuel to stop them from falling toward Earth.

Other systems, such as rockets and GPS, also face difficulties. Precision GPS can become inaccurate by several centimeters during strong storms. Because of this, experts constantly communicate with infrastructure operators to reduce risks and protect vital technology.

Difficult words: aurora borealis (colored lights in the sky near the North Pole), interfere (to cause difficulty for a system), precision (very exact accuracy).
