The tech and La Sagrada Familia – level 2

07-08-2025 07:00

Antoni Gaudí was a famous architect from Spain. He started building La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona in the 1880s. He wanted the church to be full of light and to help people feel close to God.

Gaudí used shapes from nature and special lines in his work. He knew he couldn’t finish the church, so he left plans for others to follow. Today, new architects use computers and 3D printers to copy Gaudí’s models and make new parts. They also test the building to make sure it is strong enough in wind or earthquakes. One problem was that the foundations couldn’t hold the tall towers. Engineers used stone and steel to make stronger parts. Soon, the church will be the tallest in the world.

Difficult words: architect (a person who designs houses), foundations (the base of a building), steel (a strong silver metal).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What materials did engineers use to strengthen the church’s foundations when they proved too weak to support the tall towers?
