Too difficult English test – level 3

16-12-2025 15:00

South Korea has a very hard college entrance exam, and the English part is famous for its high level.

Many students say it feels impossible and causes strong stress. This year, public anger grew so strong that the top official in charge left his job and apologized. He admitted that the questions were too hard, even after many checks.

Some questions used very complex ideas, such as philosophy and video game language. One question asked students to place a sentence inside a long and abstract text. Even experts said it was hard to answer. A professor who took the exam years ago said the test has become harder over time and may be too difficult even for native speakers.

The exam has huge importance in South Korea. People believe it can decide a student’s future and even the future of their family. On exam day, the whole country stays quiet to help students. Experts now say the test should change, because it causes fear and doesn’t truly improve real English skills.

Difficult words: entrance exam (a test you take to enter a school or college), complex (hard to understand because it has many parts), abstract (about ideas, not clear or physical things).
