Social media brings protests and problems in Asia – level 3

01-10-2025 07:00

In recent years, Asia has seen an escalation of protests, from Sri Lanka’s economic crisis to Bangladesh’s political collapse, as well as violent uprisings in Nepal and Indonesia.

Social media has played a central role in these events, helping young activists to mobilize and demand change. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Discord allowed fast communication and coordination, but they also became breeding grounds for misinformation. In Nepal, misleading posts such as rumours of a military coup or attacks on temples fueled violence. Viral content like “NepoBabies” videos showing politicians’ children living in luxury heightened public anger against corruption. In some cases, misinformation directly incited attacks, such as when a widely circulated map of politicians’ homes led to arson, leaving even family members injured.

Analysts warn that although social media empowers citizens, it can also destabilize movements. With elections approaching, some fear organized groups may weaponize misinformation more deliberately in the future.

Difficult words: mobilize (to bring people together to take action), breeding ground (a place or situation where something grows easily), incite (to make people act angrily or violently).
