Czechs support their president – level 3

06-02-2026 15:00

Tens of thousands of people marched in cities in the Czech Republic to support President Petr Pavel. He refused to approve a new environment minister after the nominee showed a Nazi salute and shared Nazi items online.

Many people filled the central squares in Prague, waved national and EU flags, and showed support for Ukraine. They also showed anger toward the prime minister and his government partners.

The conflict grew stronger after the president said a government minister tried to blackmail him with warning messages. The nominee said his past actions showed bad taste, not belief, but many people said this behavior made him unfit for a top job. Speakers at the protests praised the president for clear values and strong leadership.

Experts said the protests also showed wider public frustration with high prices, weak services, and political fights. The president thanked people for their peaceful action and asked for dialogue, but he kept his position. More protests are planned in the coming weeks.

Difficult words: nominee (a person chosen for a job or position), blackmail (to threaten someone to get money or force them to do something), frustration (a feeling of anger or stress when things don’t work well).

Which wider public frustrations did experts say were reflected in the protests?
