A new Coke – level 3
28-07-2025 07:00
Coca-Cola plans to launch a new Coke made with cane sugar in the US this year. The company already uses cane sugar in some international products, but this would be the first widespread version in the American market.
CEO James Quincey said the new version will complement existing drinks and respond to customer demand for natural sweeteners. However, switching from corn syrup to cane sugar will raise production costs and may affect supply chains. Despite falling sales volumes in North America and other markets, Coca-Cola beat profit expectations last quarter thanks to a 6% rise in prices. Volume dropped by 1%, partly due to economic pressure on lower-income consumers and a boycott in the US and Mexico. That boycott followed a viral video falsely claiming that Coca-Cola laid off Latino workers and reported them to immigration authorities.
While Coca-Cola Zero Sugar grew 14% globally, analysts say profits were mainly driven by higher prices, not more products sold. The company expects strong earnings for the whole year.
Difficult words: complement (to add to something in a positive way), boycott (when people stop buying or using something as a protest).
