Boeing will not go to court – level 3

12-11-2025 07:00

A US judge has dismissed the criminal case against Boeing over two deadly crashes of its 737 Max 8 planes that killed 346 people.

The decision came after a request from the Department of Justice (DOJ), which had earlier reached a 2021 deal with Boeing to avoid prosecution if the company improved safety and transparency.

However, in 2024, the DOJ said Boeing violated that agreement. The judge harshly criticized the government’s move, saying it failed to bring accountability and ensure the safety of passengers. Both crashes were caused by a flawed flight control system design. Families of the victims and experts worry that Boeing will not face enough independent supervision, as the company will now choose its own safety consultant instead of an outside monitor.

Critics fear this decision could risk public confidence in air travel safety.

Difficult words: accountability (being responsible for your actions), flawed (having mistakes or weaknesses), monitor (a person or group that checks if rules are followed).
