Deepfakes and Politics – level 3

21-06-2019 07:00

‘Deepfakes’ are a new type of manipulated content. For example, people can use technology to change how a video looks or how audio sounds, and it is also difficult for people to tell that it is fake.

US politicians are concerned because they say that ‘malicious actors’ can use deepfakes to create problems for elections and disrupt campaigns in the 2020 elections.

The issue is difficult to control because of the ubiquity of social media, and the speeds at which information spreads on the Internet. Some people feel that if deepfakes are defamatory, they should be removed. Others say that removing false media limits free speech.

Experts asked lawmakers to work with social media companies to police this issue better.

Difficult words: malicious (someone who wants to do something bad), ubiquity (when something is everywhere), defamatory (saying something negative and untrue about a person).
