Fewer cars in the streets of Baku – level 3

29-12-2025 07:00

Baku, Azerbaijan, is changing how people move to build a more livable and sustainable city.

The city now designs streets and public spaces for people, not only for cars. New bus lanes, bike lanes, and shared travel areas support walking, cycling, and public transport. These changes aim to cut traffic, lower pollution, and make daily travel easier.

Many residents say the new transportation system saves time and money, and improves their daily lives. Bikes and scooters help people travel short distances quickly, especially near the city center. Train and metro stations now include bike parking, which helps people move smoothly between different types of transport.

Public transport remains a key part of this plan. Baku invests in electric and low-emission buses to make travel cleaner and safer. City leaders say bikes alone are not enough, so strong bus services matter. As Baku prepares to host a global urban event, its transport plan shows how cities can support a greener future.

Difficult words: livable (a place that is good and comfortable to live in), host (to welcome and hold an event), urban (about a city or town).
