Nepal protests – level 3
12-09-2025 07:00
Nepal is facing its worst political crisis in recent history. Massive protests broke out after the government banned social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Young people, frustrated with corruption, unemployment, and lack of opportunities, filled the streets. The government tried to stop them with a violent crackdown, killing 19 protesters and injuring many more. Instead of calming the situation, this violence made the public even angrier. They set fire to government buildings, including the Parliament and Supreme Court, and attacked ministers and opposition leaders. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli eventually resigned, saying he wanted a political solution, but his departure has left Nepal in uncertainty.
The army and president are calling for calm, but the future remains unclear. Many protesters demand younger leaders, and two names have appeared: Balendra Shah, the 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu, and Rabi Lamichhane, a politician recently freed from prison. The coming days will decide whether the unrest ends or grows.
Difficult words: crackdown (sudden strong action by police or army), unrest (a situation with protests and violence).
