New airport tech – level 3
14-08-2025 07:00
At busy airports like Amsterdam’s Schiphol, the future of travel involves new technology to improve the movement of luggage and people.
Airports are trying self-driving vehicles, but adding these is challenging because the airport is already busy thanks to planes, passengers, and trucks. They test the technology carefully to make sure it is safe before using it everywhere.
One example is an autonomous baggage dolly that transports luggage from storage to planes by itself. It uses cameras and sensors to follow traffic rules, avoid obstacles, and stop for pedestrians. These vehicles help manage luggage faster and more efficiently, changing how airports work. Another challenge is that airports are very crowded, so technology must be very reliable.
Experts expect fully self-driving airports by 2050. Although self-driving cars are common elsewhere, airports are more controlled, so the technology must be tested well to keep flights on time and safe. This slow progress ensures safety for everyone at the airport.
Difficult words: autonomous (self-driving), obstacle (something in the way), efficiently (in a way that works well).
