People look for lost things – level 3

05-08-2025 07:00

After flash floods hit Kerr County, Texas, many people lost important personal belongings. A woman named Dondie Persyn started a Facebook group called “Found on the Guadalupe River” to help.

It began with just a few people, but now there are nearly 50,000 volunteers. They search the riverbanks and collect items like clothes, toys, letters, and photos. Their goal is to return these things to the people who lost them. Many of these items are not valuable in money, but they are emotionally important. People look for items that remind them of life before the flood. Some are looking for a child’s toy or a family photo. Volunteers wash and dry clothes, organize papers, and post pictures online to help owners find their things again.

The project is not just about returning objects. It is also about helping people feel hope again. Finding even a small item can give comfort. It helps people remember happier times and begin to heal.

Difficult words: belonging (something that a person owns), emotionally (in a way that shows strong feelings), comfort (a sense of being less sad or worried).

How does finding even a small recovered item help those affected by the flood begin to heal?
