Boat in Thailand – level 3
Amateur video captured the scenes of panic after a boat carrying more than a hundred people capsized in Thailand, killing at least 13.
Dozens of people are still missing after the double-decker boat crashed into the bank of the Chao Phraya river in the ancient city of Ayutthaya. At least one child is among the dead, according to the province’s deputy governor. Most of the boat’s passengers were Muslim pilgrims returning from a religious rite in Ayutthaya, a UNESCO world heritage site located some 80 kilometres north of the capital of Bangkok.
Accidents like this one are not uncommon in Thailand where safety standards are often far below international norms. Rescue workers continue to search for survivors.
Difficult words: dozens (many), deputy (a second person in a line of command), pilgrim (a person who travels somewhere for religious reasons), rite (a ceremony).
