Thai king stops the parliament – level 3
23-12-2025 15:00
Thailand’s leader has the king’s approval to end the work of parliament and start new national elections in 45 to 60 days. This comes while there are violent fights at the border with Cambodia.
The decision surprises many because parliament was in the middle of strong talks about rules, and the main opposition party wanted to test confidence in the government. The leader acted before the opposition could take steps against him. The opposition said the government broke promises, and both sides argued for weeks. The countdown to the next election has begun, and the vote must happen within two months, most likely on a Sunday. The leader may stay in office for a short time before elections.
During this time, the government faced problems such as floods that killed people and slow help for victims. The border fights with Cambodia continue, and world leaders are watching. Some people think the leader may use feelings of pride in the country to get more support in the elections. The next weeks will be very important for Thailand’s politics.
Difficult words: approval (official agreement or permission to do something), confidence (trust or belief that someone can do something or that something is correct), countdown (counting the time before an event happens).
