Canadians don’t buy US products – level 3

24-07-2025 07:00

Many Canadians are now avoiding American goods in response to US tariffs and President Trump’s policies.

Around 71% of Canadians say they are buying fewer American products. The ‘Buy Canada’ movement is growing, and it is hurting the US economy. Experts say the US could lose up to 90 billion dollars by 2025, with effects spreading to countries like Mexico and the European Union. Tourism is also affected. Canadian visits to the US have dropped by 50%, hurting border businesses. A Canadian grocery store owner says shoppers demand Canadian-made items and even avoid American brands like Coca-Cola unless labeled ‘Made in Canada.’ Some US food exports like wine and spirits have been pulled off Canadian shelves. Canada now puts a 25% tax on US alcohol.

The boycott is spreading to Europe, where many now reject American companies. Tesla sales in Europe are down due to politics and brand damage. Global travel to the US is also falling, with visitor spending down by billions. The long-term impact may be a shift in global trade and a slowdown in economic growth.

Difficult words: spirit (strong alcoholic drink), boycott (refusing to buy something as a protest), shift (a change in direction or focus).
